I've been wanting to do some sort of window treatment on some of the windows in our house, but even "cheap" curtains add up fast when you get the hardware and various accoutrements.
Enter:BURLAP!
It's not just for potato sack races anymore!
Burlap isn't really jazzy, it's total ultilitarian and it's super cheap. Turns out they have a few colors at JoAnn's. Standard beige, dark brown espresso color and a sage green. I can't say I'd have chosen burlap if it hadn't been for the sage color. I had the idea to finish the edges, but since burlap's edges are tricky since they're so messy, I decided to actually buy...a needle and yarn. I had no idea what I was doing, I just picked a yellow/gold twisted yarn and a fairly large needle. Look at me, throwing caution to the wind.
I worked with the natural factory crease in the burlap (not even attempting to iron in a new one.) I eyeballed the width of my office window and cut the fabric, then just did a "loop stitch"??? I know that's the name of a stitch, but I'm not sure if that's the one I ACTUALLY used. I just sewed the two layers together leaving the creased edge (top edge) bare. It was pretty easy and although it's not like earth shatteringly beautiful, I really like it. It's simple, but I think the yarn says "my maker is too crafty for her own good".
What makes this project even more poor person? I used three nails to hang it. No high falutin curtain rods for us folk.

Love it! I "made" some curtains for the boys room. I also broke the sewing machine.
I think those are amazing. Not 'poor person' at all. You've got great style.
